By road

From Bologna-Florence: in Florence there are two possible routes to Pisa: the Autostrada A11 Firenze-mare (E76) and the Florence-Pisa-Livorno expressway (SGC FI-PI-LI). The A11 can be followed until its end, where it connects to Motorway A12. The SGC FI-PI-LI has 3 exits in Pisa, named Pisa Nord-Est (eastern area), Pisa Aeroporto (central-southern area) and Pisa Aurelia (western area). A fourth exit connects the SGC FI-PI-LI to Motorway A12 Pisa centro exit.

From Genoa: Motorway A12 (E80) “Genova-Rosignano” has 2 exits in Pisa: Pisa Nord (then SS1 “Aurelia” trunk road, travelling approx. 6 km south to Pisa) and Pisa Centro (then SGC FI-PI-LI toward Florence).

From Rome: the road from Rome to Pisa is a succession of motorways and trunk roads. The last stretch is the Motorway A12 (E80) “Genova-Rosignano” and the exit is Pisa Centro (then SGC FI-PI-LI toward Florence).

Most of the historical centre of Pisa falls within the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL). Only authorised vehicles are permitted access to this zone; the entrances (electronic barriers) are monitored by 24 hour cameras and unauthorised access is sanctioned with a fine. Hotels within the ZTL provide a temporary permit to their guests.
